New York Sketches
我没有看过《Here is New York》，但是读完这本小集子会想去找来看看。NYS里面让我觉得纽约味最重的是“The Rock Dove”这一篇，讲纽约的鸽子。虽然是讲鸽子，但是实际上写的是NYC城市的节奏。就鸽子找水喝的问题，有这样一段描述：
In dry speels, pigeons hunt about for water. A truck draws up to deliver shaved ice to a restaurant, a few flakes of ice fall to the pavement; pigeons swoop down to await the tiny thaw. In freezing weather, pigeons seek subway ventilators and other flues, where the warm draft creates local melting conditions. A thirsty pigeon will drink almost any sort of Manhattan cocktail: the creamy spillage from a caterer's tray blended with the drip from the tailpipe of a cross-town bus.
我在读这一段的时候，都能听到巴士停靠的喘气声，看到人行道边地面上的奶白色污渍。他接下来又描述四种鸽子的生活环境，其中一种是在空调窗机的阴影下。真的是很有纽约的画面感……
里面最让我觉得有意思的是他写到的很多点（好的坏的）在今天置换掉关键词仍然适用（又或者说，人总是面对同样的问题，变化的只是促成这些问题的条件）。比如抱怨收音机节目和电视节目占据了人太多的注意力：
...(radio) fur the edge of many minds...Right now radio is at a turning point. It better be a turning-off point, not a turning-on point. One is free choice, the other is the slavery of sound.
I think E.B.White would be horrified by the options that are out there to try to trap human attention today.
另一篇说到他搬家的经历，从整理杂物的困难，讲到人对物质似乎无穷无尽的追求。
A home is like a reservoir equipped with a gate valve: the valve permits influx but prevents outflow. Acquisition goes on night and day--smoothly, subtly, imperceptibly. ... Goods and chattels seek a man out; they find him even though his guard is up.
但最符合这本集子调性的是"Getting away"这一篇：两个乘船离开纽约的乘客在甲板上大肆抱怨纽约的种种不是，但每一个抱怨都勾起一段关于纽约生活的美好回忆，就这样“言不由衷”地得出了“Certainly is nice to be getting away"的结论。还有什么方式更适合述说每一个纽约人和纽约的关系呢？
漫长的余生
这本写得是很好的，但确实有点文不对题。书的推销给人的印象是把视角放在一个小人物身上去观看一个时代，所以我以为会是像《奶酪与蛆虫》这样的微观历史，实际看起来却完全不是这回事。书的侧重仍然是讲朝代更迭，王侯将相。书里比较切题的是提到女性在新兴宗教里的作用——但这一段的篇幅基本上就一页匆匆带过。
话说回来，如果没有这些预先期待，喜欢看权谋内容的读者应该会看得比较投入(not me)。人类对自己同类的残忍真的是时常突破我的想象，为了掌控皇位权力，把女人和母亲当墨水渍一样擦掉，偶有幸存者，只会复制和升级这样的残酷。所以并不是很愉悦的阅读体验。
